Choosing Between a 32, 64, and 128 Channel NVR

Choose a 64 camera NVR when you need more than 32 cameras or expect to grow beyond that number. One recorder brings together views from entrances, driveways, parking lots, stockrooms, and separate buildings on the same network. You do not have to install all 64 cameras at once.

Connecting 64 Cameras with External PoE Switches

64 channel NVRs have no built-in PoE ports. External PoE switches supply power to the cameras and carry their video over Ethernet cable. The switches connect to the local network, where the NVR receives and records the video.

For example, place one switch in the main building and another in a network-connected outbuilding. Each camera connects to its nearby switch, while one NVR records both buildings. This avoids bringing every camera cable back to the recorder.

What to Look for in a 64 Channel NVR

• Camera resolution: Choose a recorder for the cameras you plan to use, including 4K, 12MP, or 16MP models. You can mix resolutions, such as 4K cameras for general coverage and higher-resolution cameras where you need more detail.
• Recording bandwidth: This is the total video data the NVR accepts from its cameras, measured in Mbps. Add the cameras' recording bitrates and choose a recorder with room above that total. Channel count alone does not tell you how much video the recorder handles.
• Viewing and playback: Consider how you will watch the system: on a monitor connected to the NVR, through computer software, or from your phone. Recording 64 cameras and playing back 64 recordings at once are different capabilities.
• Storage capacity: Compare the number of hard drive bays and the drive sizes each recorder accepts. Plan around how many days of footage you want to keep.
• Camera compatibility: Match the recorder to your camera series for straightforward setup and smart event recording. For existing third-party cameras, check ONVIF compatibility before choosing the NVR.

How Much Recording Bandwidth Do You Need?

As an example, 64 cameras set to 4 Mbps each produce 256 Mbps of video. That is a starting point for selecting the NVR and switch connections, with extra capacity for audio and bitrate changes. Use your planned camera settings for this calculation; a 4K camera does not have one fixed bitrate.

Local Storage for Continuous or Motion Recording

Video stays on hard drives inside the NVR, with no monthly cloud storage fee. Choose continuous recording for a full timeline, scheduled recording for set hours, or motion recording to save footage when activity occurs. Internet access is not required for local recording.

Compatible Cameras and Smart Detection

With compatible cameras, smart detection identifies people or vehicles and triggers event recording and alerts.
