If you've ever provided law enforcement with security footage to identify a suspect, you know that capturing a clear license plate is vital for prosecuting criminals in vehicles. While general security cameras can capture plate numbers in daylight on stationary vehicles, they fail at night due to glare from infrared night vision.

This Avalonix 4MP License Plate Camera with advanced ANPR technology is specifically designed to capture license plates at night, even from approaching vehicles with headlights on. Equipped with ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology, this camera ensures precise plate detection in various lighting and weather conditions.

For setup tips and best practices, read our License Plate Capture Camera Guide.

Key Features of the 4MP ANPR Camera

With advanced image features such as shutter rate control, IR intensity control, and WDR, you can set this camera to record footage of vehicle plates passing by at up to 75 mph during the day or night. By utilizing these features, you can capture plates from approaching vehicles within a 15-degree angle of view, even if the headlights are shining directly into the camera.

  • Crystal-Clear Video: Large 1/1.8" 4MP CMOS image sensor captures sharp, detailed footage.
  • Superior Night Vision: Smart IR technology prevents plate overexposure from headlights.
  • Long-Range Plate Capture: Captures plates up to 100 feet away, even at speeds of 75 mph.
  • Motorized Zoom Lens: Adjustable 8–32mm lens offers up to 5x magnification, narrowing the field of view from 39.9° to 15.1° for precise long-range capture.
  • AI-Powered Recognition: Identifies 147 vehicle logos, 12 colors, and 9 vehicle types.
  • PoE Connectivity: Part of our PoE camera products, you can easily power and control the camera with a single CAT5e cable.

Optimized for License Plate Capture – Day & Night

Daytime Performance

This license plate camera records 2K resolution video at 30 FPS, providing twice the detail of standard 1080P security cameras. It allows for digital zoom on recorded or live footage, making it easy to read plate numbers even at a 40ft distance from the focal point.

Nighttime Performance

Most security cameras produce glare when capturing plates at night. This ANPR camera eliminates that issue using:

  • Infrared night vision (up to 100 feet) with adjustable intensity.
  • Warm Light Illumination: Built-in warm lights can trigger alongside the strobe lights for enhanced nighttime visibility.
  • Shutter rate control to ensure crisp, clear plate captures without overexposure.
  • Smart IR technology to automatically adapt to ambient lighting conditions.

Precision Focal Distance and Viewing Angles

The camera has an 8–32mm motorized zoom lens that can be controlled over the network from a computer, NVR, or mobile app. Note that the 4MP resolution video provides up to 40 feet of discernible detail in recorded or live video, meaning you can digitally zoom in up to 40 feet away from the camera's focal distance to identify a plate number at the widest lens setting.

Here’s how it performs at different zoom levels:

  • 8mm (widest view): Provides a 39.9-degree horizontal view. At this setting, the optimal capture distance is 27 to 40 feet, with a 26-foot-wide field of view.
  • 32mm (maximum zoom): Narrows the view to 15.1 degrees, allowing plate capture up to 100 feet away, with a 20-foot-wide field of view.

For the clearest captures, position the camera at a 15-degree angle or less from the path of moving vehicles. This minimizes distortion and ensures the IR illuminator accurately lights the plate without whiteout.

Installation & Setup Tips

The best way to utilize this camera is by positioning it at a chokepoint, such as an entrance or exit on or near your property, where vehicles are moving at speeds of up to 75 mph. The camera is powerful enough to accurately capture license plates even at these higher speeds. It also has the ability to detect pedestrians, triggering an alarm if a person is detected walking in a vehicle-designated area, and loitering detection, alerting users if an individual remains near restricted zones such as security barriers. Mount the camera facing directly at the entry or egress point. Avoid trying to capture plates at significant angles, as that greatly reduces the clarity of capture. Deploy the camera over the network and configure it using the web interface. For an added layer of security, the camera allows for unlicensed vehicle detection, which triggers an alert if a car lacks a registration plate.

Built to withstand harsh conditions, the camera boasts an IP67 weatherproof rating and IK10 vandal resistance, ensuring protection from dust, moisture, and impact.

  • Positioning Matters: Mount the camera at a chokepoint (e.g., entry/exit points) to capture plates effectively.
  • Optimal Viewing Angle: Keep within a 15-degree field of view for best accuracy.
  • Network Setup: Use a PoE injector or Avalonix NVR for seamless video integration.
  • Storage Options: Save footage to an NVR, NAS, FTP server, or up to 256GB microSD card.
  • Remote Access: View live footage and adjust settings from a PC, mobile app, or NVR.

You will need to use a Windows PC to take advantage of the full web interface of the camera by installing a Windows plugin. You can draw a rectangular area for detecting passing vehicles with plates that the camera can analyze.

Pro Tip: If you're using the microSD for storage, the camera can save still shots of the plates and store license plate numbers. If you pair this ANPR license plate capture camera with one of the Avalonix Premium Series AI NVR recorders, you can take advantage of video recording and seamless data integration.
