If you've ever provided law enforcement with security video to help catch a thief or vandal, you know that clear capture of the license plate is essential for prosecuting criminals in vehicles. General observation security cameras can provide a satisfactory capture of plate numbers in daylight of still vehicles, but not at night. The infrared night vision from any outdoor security camera will reflect off a license plate at night, making the plate appear as a white slate. To capture license plates at night, especially from approaching vehicles with headlights shining into the camera, a professional License Plate Camera like this Long Range Plate Capture Camera is required.

This ANPR Camera by Avalonix camera delivers exceptional video quality thanks to its large 1/1.8" 4MP CMOS image sensor. It is capable of capturing video at up to 30 fps at full 4MP resolution, which is twice the detail available from a 1080P License Plate Camera. On recorded or live video, you can use digital zoom to see detail farther. The built-in infrared LEDs provide 100 feet of night vision in complete darkness and allow the user to control IR intensity, turn the IR off, or set it to Smart IR. The IR from this camera will not produce a whiteout plate; the camera has special shutter rate control to get crisp clear plate captures.

You can also take advantage of the Smart Scene Adaptive technology that allows the camera to switch between different scene settings automatically, enabling users to experience the camera's excellent low-light performance.

This camera is versatile, functioning as a camera for general surveillance during the day or night or as a license plate camera to capture crisp, clear footage for prosecution purposes. However, it’s worth noting that the camera’s primary function is for traffic and access control; it does not have smart analytics and is not designed to see people within the vehicles. Below is an actual example of image captured of a passing vehicle around a bend in the street.

The best way to use the camera is to identify a chokepoint at an entrance or exit on your property where cars are slowing down to 37 mph or slower. Mount the camera facing directly at the entry or egress point. Avoid having angles as that reduces clarity of capture. Deploy the camera over the network and configure it using the web interface. You will need to use a Windows PC running MS Edge to take advantage of the full web interface of the camera. You can draw a rectangular area for detecting passing vehicles with plates that the camera can analyze. If you're using the microSD for storage, the camera can save still shots of the plates and a database in csv format of plates that it detected. If you pair this ANPR license plate capture camera with one of the Avalonix Premium 5000 Series NVR recorders, you can take advantage of video recording and seamless data integration.

Setting the camera for nighttime plate capture requires some configuration and fine-tuning based on the amount of ambient light, angle of view, and distance of approaching vehicles. We recommend placing this IP camera on a network first using a PoE injector to access its built-in web server, which allows for fine-tuning of the camera's advanced image features. After configuration, you can connect it to one of our NVR recorders to record video over the long term. For standalone use and video storage for a couple days, the camera supports an optional internal microSD card up to 128GB.

With advanced image features such as shutter rate control, IR intensity control, and WDR, you can set this camera to record footage of vehicle plates passing by at up to 37mph during the day or night. By utilizing these features, you can capture plates from approaching vehicles within a 15-degree angle of view, even if the headlights are shining directly into the camera.

The camera has a 10–50mm motorized lens that can be controlled over the network from a computer, NVR, or mobile app. Note that the 4MP resolution video provides up to 40 feet of discernible detail in recorded or live video, meaning you can digitally zoom in up to 40 feet away from the camera's focal distance to identify a plate number at the widest lens setting. When zoomed out all the way at the 10 mm setting, the angle of view from the camera is the widest at 40.6 degrees. At its widest setting, the closest a vehicle can be is 27 feet, with a 23 feet wide field of view. Depending on how you set the optical zoom of the camera, you can configure it for an optimal viewing distance for your application.

If you intend to use this camera solely as a license plate capture camera it can be set to capture license plates up to 100 feet away. When you zoom in the lens all the way, you'll get a 9.25 degree view, with a 19.5 feet wide field of view.

Let's not forget this license plate recognition camera is equipped with ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) technology, enabling it to read and store license plate numbers automatically for added convenience and efficiency in monitoring vehicle traffic. It can also try to detect and store information such as the vehicle type, logo, color, or if no plate is present on the vehicle. The accuracy of the plate number capture and car type/model is dependent on the speed of the vehicle and how clear of a shot you have. The car type and model detection algorithm does have some margin of error.
