The Avalonix 4K6002 is a 4K 8MP analog turret security camera made for customers who want better video from a traditional wired coax camera system without changing everything over to IP cameras. It uses a standard BNC video connection and works with compatible CVI, TVI, AHD and CVBS DVRs.

What makes this camera a little different from many basic 4K analog cameras is the range of video formats it supports. In CVI mode, the camera can output 4K video at up to 25/30fps. It can also output 4K at 15fps in TVI or AHD mode. That gives installers more flexibility when replacing cameras on an existing system or matching the camera to a new security DVR.

The camera has a fixed 3.6mm lens with an approximately 87° horizontal viewing angle. That is wide enough for many entrances, rooms, storefronts, driveways and general outdoor areas without going so wide that everything in the distance becomes very small. At night, built-in Smart IR provides black-and-white night vision at distances up to about 98ft.

4K Analog Video with CVI, TVI, AHD and CVBS

The 4K6002 is better described as a 4-in-1 analog security camera than as only a CVI camera. Its BNC video output can be switched between CVI, TVI, AHD and CVBS, which makes it useful with a much wider range of analog and hybrid DVRs.

Video Format Supported Output
CVI 4K at 25/30fps or 15fps; 5MP at 20fps; 4MP at 25/30fps
TVI 4K at 15fps
AHD 4K at 15fps
CVBS 960H standard-definition video

There is one thing worth understanding about the 30fps specification. The camera itself can send a 4K CVI signal at up to 30 frames per second, but that does not mean every DVR will record the camera at 4K 30fps. Most 4K analog DVRs record 8MP analog cameras at a lower frame rate, often somewhere around 7 to 15fps depending on the recorder and channel configuration. The higher frame rate from the camera is commonly more noticeable during live viewing.

If recorded frame rate is important for your application, check the 8MP recording specification of the DVR rather than looking only at the maximum frame rate printed for the camera.

3.6mm Lens with an 87° Viewing Angle

The fixed 3.6mm lens gives the 4K6002 an approximately 87° horizontal viewing angle. For a general-purpose security camera, that is a useful middle ground. You can cover a reasonably wide area while still keeping more detail on people and objects than you would normally get from an extremely wide lens.

The turret can be physically aimed after installation, so it works well on ceilings, soffits and walls where the camera needs to be pointed toward a doorway, walkway, parking area or another specific part of the property.

Up to 98ft Smart IR Night Vision

When the light level drops, the camera switches to infrared night vision using a mechanical IR-cut filter. Twelve infrared LEDs provide illumination at distances up to approximately 98ft. In complete darkness the picture changes to black and white.

Smart IR helps control the strength of the infrared light when someone gets closer to the camera. This can reduce the bright, washed-out faces and clothing that sometimes show up when a person walks directly in front of a basic IR camera.

Use It to Upgrade an Existing Coax Camera System

If you already have BNC security camera wiring in place, the 4K6002 can be a practical way to move up to a higher-resolution camera without rewiring the property for Ethernet. The important part is making sure the existing DVR and cable are capable of carrying the resolution and video format you want to use.

A DVR does not necessarily have to support 4K for the camera to work at all. The camera also provides lower-resolution CVI modes and a CVBS output. Compatibility still depends on what signal formats and resolutions the DVR accepts, so an old recorder should not be assumed compatible simply because it has BNC connectors.

If you are replacing cameras on an existing system and are not sure what the recorder supports, contact us with the make and model of the DVR before ordering.

Compatible Avalonix DVR Recorders

For full 8MP video, pair the 4K6002 with a compatible 4K analog or hybrid XVR. CCTV Camera World carries Avalonix DVRs that can work with combinations of analog HD cameras and IP cameras, which is useful when upgrading a system a few cameras at a time.

You can browse all security DVR recorders, or shop by recorder size: 4 channel DVRs, 8 channel DVRs, 16 channel DVRs, and 32 channel DVRs.

Remember that the DVR's recording frame rate is separate from the frame rate the camera is capable of sending. Check the recorder's 8MP recording specifications if you need a certain number of recorded frames per second.

What Cable Should I Use?

Good cable matters more as analog camera resolution goes up. For a permanent 4K installation, we recommend solid copper RG59 Siamese coax cable or premade Siamese cable that is specifically rated for 4K analog video. Siamese cable keeps the BNC video cable and the camera's power conductors together in one run.

The 4K6002 can also be installed over solid copper CAT5e or CAT6 using compatible video baluns. Our video and power baluns have been tested for 4K video and are useful when both video and 12V power need to travel over network cable.

When video and power are both being carried over CAT5e, we recommend keeping the cable run to about 150ft or less using solid copper cable. Longer power runs can cause voltage drop even when the video signal itself is still good.

For longer distances, use a compatible HD analog video balun for the video signal and place the 12V power source closer to the camera. Video can be carried up to approximately 500ft in a properly installed system while keeping camera power within a shorter distance. Browse our solid copper CAT5e and CAT6 network cable options for balun installations.

Connect the Camera Directly to a TV

A DVR is not required if you only need a live picture on a television or monitor. The camera can be connected to our BNC to HDMI converter, which accepts 4K CVI, TVI and AHD camera signals and converts them to an HDMI output.

The converter outputs video at up to 1080P over HDMI, so it does not send a native 4K HDMI picture to the television. It is mainly useful when you want to view the analog camera directly without installing a DVR.

Outdoor-Rated Metal Turret Housing

The camera housing is metal and carries an IP67 weather-resistance rating. It can be used indoors or outdoors and is specified for operating temperatures from -20°F to 140°F.

Its turret-style housing is also compact at roughly 3.68 inches in diameter and 3.13 inches high. There is no large outer glass dome in front of the lens, which helps make the camera easy to aim and keeps the overall installation fairly low profile.

DORI Viewing Distances

DORI measurements are useful when deciding roughly how much detail a camera may provide at different distances. They are planning guidelines rather than guaranteed facial identification distances because lighting, motion, camera angle, installation height and DVR settings all affect the finished video.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 4K6002 support CVI, TVI and AHD?

Yes. The camera has switchable CVI, TVI, AHD and CVBS video output. CVI supports 4K at up to 25/30fps, while TVI and AHD support 4K at up to 15fps.

Will the camera record 4K video at 30fps?

The camera can output a 4K CVI signal at up to 30fps, but the DVR determines the recorded frame rate. Most 4K analog DVRs record 8MP cameras at a lower frame rate, often around 7 to 15fps. You may still see smoother video during live viewing when the DVR supports the higher incoming frame rate.

Will the 4K6002 work with a DVR that is not 4K?

It can work with some non-4K DVRs, but compatibility depends on the signal format and resolutions supported by the recorder. The camera offers CVI modes below 4K as well as CVBS output. If you have an older DVR, contact us with its make and model rather than assuming it will work based only on the BNC connector.

Can I connect this camera directly to a TV?

Yes. You can use a compatible BNC-to-HDMI converter to connect the camera to an HDMI television or monitor without a DVR. Our converter accepts 4K CVI, TVI and AHD input and outputs video at up to 1080P through HDMI.

What type of cable should I use with the 4K6002?

For 4K coax installations, we recommend solid copper RG59 Siamese cable or premade coax cable specifically rated for 4K analog cameras. The camera can also be installed over solid copper CAT5e or CAT6 using compatible 4K video baluns.

Can I send video and power over CAT5e cable?

Yes, with compatible video and power baluns. We recommend solid copper CAT5e or CAT6 and keeping video-plus-power runs to about 150ft. For longer distances, carry the video farther with HD baluns while placing the camera's 12V power supply closer to the camera to reduce voltage drop.

How far can the analog video signal run over network cable?

With compatible 4K HD video baluns and good solid copper network cable, video can be carried up to approximately 500ft. Power distance is a separate issue, so the 12V power source should normally remain much closer to the camera.

How far does the night vision reach?

The built-in infrared LEDs are rated for up to approximately 98ft. Actual usable distance varies with the scene, reflected IR light, weather and surrounding lighting.

Can the 4K6002 be installed outdoors?

Yes. The camera has an all-metal IP67-rated housing and is designed for indoor or outdoor use.

Is this a PoE camera?

No. The 4K6002 is an analog BNC security camera. Video is carried through its BNC connector and the camera requires 12V DC power.

Does the 4K6002 have a built-in microphone?

No. This model does not have a built-in microphone. If audio recording is required, the DVR and installation must support a separate microphone or another audio-capable camera.
