Lorex DVR, NVR, and Camera Replacements

If one of your Lorex cameras has failed, your recorder stopped working, or the mobile app is no longer supported, you usually do not need to replace the entire security camera system. CCTV Camera World offers replacement cameras and recorders for many older Lorex systems, so you can often replace only the failed equipment and keep the cameras, recorder, and wiring that still work.

Private Protocol Compatibility for Lorex IP Cameras and NVRs

Our compatibility with Lorex IP equipment is not limited to a basic ONVIF video connection. Compatible Avalonix NVRs and IP cameras can communicate with supported Lorex IP equipment using the private protocol supported by those systems. This provides much deeper camera-to-recorder integration than connecting a camera through ONVIF alone.

For compatible Lorex IP cameras from generations sold through approximately mid-2026, users can expect native-style integration with an Avalonix NVR for supported functions such as live video, recording, audio, PTZ control, motion detection, and compatible smart detection features. The compatibility also works in the other direction, allowing compatible Avalonix IP cameras to be used with supported Lorex NVRs. Exact features depend on the camera and recorder models being used.

Replacing Lorex MPX Cameras and DVRs

Lorex used the MPX name for many of its HD-over-coax cameras. These cameras use BNC coax cabling and HD-CVI technology. Our compatible HDCVI cameras can replace many Lorex MPX cameras, and our Avalonix DVRs support the major coax camera formats used by Lorex, including CVBS, AHD, HD-TVI, and HD-CVI.

This means a failed Lorex MPX camera can often be replaced without changing the DVR or coax cable. Likewise, a failed Lorex DVR can often be replaced with an Avalonix DVR while leaving compatible Lorex cameras and wiring in place. Camera resolution and signal compatibility still need to be checked before ordering.

All of our recorders include free remote viewing apps and support flexible recording modes including continuous, scheduled, motion, and event-based recording. Compatible models also support newer AI features such as person and vehicle detection. There are no required monthly fees or subscriptions.

Replace a Lorex Camera Without Replacing Your Recorder

If only one or a few Lorex cameras have failed, you may be able to replace those cameras individually and continue using your existing Lorex recorder and wiring. You do not automatically need a new system just because a camera stopped working.

Replace a Lorex IP or PoE Camera

Our compatible IP cameras can replace individual Lorex IP and PoE cameras on supported Lorex NVRs. In most installations, the existing Ethernet cable can remain in place.

Compatible Avalonix IP cameras are not limited to ONVIF when connected to supported Lorex NVRs. They can communicate using the private protocol supported by compatible Lorex systems, providing deeper integration than an ONVIF-only camera connection. Depending on the camera and recorder models, supported functions can include video, recording, audio, PTZ control, motion detection, and compatible smart detection features.

This makes a compatible Avalonix IP camera a practical replacement when an individual Lorex IP camera has failed but the Lorex NVR is still working.

Replace a Lorex MPX Coax Camera

Lorex marketed many of its HD-over-coax cameras as MPX cameras. Our compatible HDCVI and HD Analog security cameras can replace many Lorex MPX cameras while continuing to use the existing Lorex DVR and coax cabling.

Because Lorex sold several generations and resolutions of MPX equipment, the replacement camera needs to use a signal type and resolution that your existing DVR supports. Send us the Lorex DVR and camera model numbers if you would like us to verify compatibility before you order.

Replacement cameras are available in bullet and dome camera styles, with options including audio, motorized lenses, night vision, PTZ control, and 4K resolution.

Replace Your Lorex DVR or NVR Without Rewiring

If your Lorex recorder has failed but the cameras are still working, you can often replace only the DVR or NVR. Your existing cameras and installed cabling can stay right where they are.

Replace a Lorex DVR and Keep Your MPX Cameras

Our Avalonix DVRs can replace compatible Lorex DVRs while continuing to use existing Lorex MPX and other coax-based cameras. Avalonix DVRs support the major analog and HD-over-coax formats used by Lorex, including CVBS, AHD, HD-TVI, and HD-CVI.

For many Lorex coax systems, replacing the recorder is simply a matter of disconnecting the existing BNC camera cables from the old DVR and connecting them to the compatible Avalonix replacement DVR. There is usually no reason to replace the coax wiring already installed throughout the property.

Replace a Lorex NVR and Keep Your Lorex IP Cameras

Our Avalonix NVRs can replace compatible Lorex NVRs while continuing to use existing Lorex IP and PoE cameras.

This compatibility is not limited to basic ONVIF video streaming. Compatible Lorex IP cameras from generations sold through approximately mid-2026 can communicate with Avalonix NVRs using the private protocol supported by those systems. With compatible equipment, supported functions such as video, recording, audio, PTZ controls, motion detection, and smart detection features can continue to work through the replacement NVR.

In many installations, the physical swap is simple. Disconnect the Ethernet camera cables, monitor, mouse, and network cable from the old Lorex NVR and reconnect them to the compatible Avalonix NVR. Use the power supply included with the new recorder. Depending on how the Lorex cameras were previously configured, you may also need to enter the camera password or reset the cameras before the new NVR can add them.

Replacement recorders are available with different channel counts and hard drive storage capacities. If you are unsure which recorder is compatible with your cameras, call us or send us your Lorex model numbers before ordering.

Upgrade Your Lorex System to 4K or AI

If your current Lorex system is limited to basic 1080P video or older pixel-based motion detection, upgrading the recorder and selected cameras can add newer features without necessarily replacing everything you already have.

  • 2K or 4K recording capability
  • Higher video bitrates for better image quality
  • AI person and vehicle detection
  • Updated mobile apps and PC software
  • Larger and more efficient storage options
  • Higher channel counts for future expansion

Features vary by recorder and camera model, and some AI functions require compatible cameras. You can select an upgraded recorder above or browse our complete 4K security camera systems.

Complete Lorex System Replacement Options

If the recorder and several cameras are outdated or failing, replacing the complete Lorex system may make more sense. You can upgrade to a new PoE security camera system or continue using existing coaxial cabling with a complete HD Analog security camera system.

A complete system replacement gives you a recorder and cameras designed to work together and can provide:

  • Matched recorder and camera compatibility
  • Higher resolution cameras
  • Newer AI and Smart Detection features
  • More efficient video storage
  • Additional camera channels for future expansion
  • Current mobile and computer viewing software

How Do I Know Whether I Need a DVR or NVR Replacement?

Look at the camera cables connected to the back of your existing Lorex recorder:

  • BNC coax connectors: You most likely have a DVR and Lorex MPX, HD Analog, or older analog cameras.
  • RJ45 Ethernet connectors: You most likely have an NVR with IP or PoE cameras.

If you are unsure, take a clear photo of the back of your Lorex recorder and send it to us, or call (716) 229-0080. A recorder and camera model number is even better if you have it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lorex Replacement

What security system can replace Lorex?

Avalonix Premium Series recorders and cameras can replace many Lorex systems without requiring you to replace everything at once. Depending on your existing equipment, you may be able to replace only the DVR, NVR, IP camera, or MPX camera that has failed and continue using compatible cameras and wiring.

Can I replace only the Lorex recorder?

Yes. In many cases, you can replace only the Lorex DVR or NVR and continue using the cameras and cabling already installed. The replacement recorder needs to support the type and resolution of your existing cameras.

Can I replace my Lorex DVR with another brand?

Yes. A compatible Avalonix Premium Series DVR can replace many Lorex DVRs because our DVRs support the major coax camera formats used by Lorex, including CVBS, AHD, HD-TVI, and HD-CVI. Camera resolution also needs to be supported by the replacement DVR.

Can I replace a Lorex NVR without replacing the cameras?

Yes. Avalonix Premium Series NVRs are directly compatible with many Lorex IP cameras. Compatible Lorex cameras can communicate with our NVRs using the private protocol supported by those systems instead of being limited to a basic ONVIF video connection. Depending on the models, you may need to enter the camera password or reset the cameras before adding them to the replacement NVR.

Can I replace a Lorex IP camera with an Avalonix IP camera?

Yes, with a compatible Lorex NVR. Supported Avalonix IP cameras can communicate with compatible Lorex NVRs using the private protocol supported by those systems rather than relying only on ONVIF. This can preserve supported integration such as video, recording, audio, PTZ controls, motion detection, and compatible smart detection features.

Can I replace a Lorex MPX camera with an HDCVI camera?

Yes, in many Lorex coax systems. Lorex MPX cameras use HD-CVI technology over BNC coax cable. A compatible HDCVI camera can replace many Lorex MPX cameras as long as your existing DVR supports the camera's signal type and resolution.

What is a Lorex MPX camera?

MPX stands for Megapixel Over Coax. Lorex used the MPX name for many of its HD Analog cameras that transmit HD-CVI video over BNC coax cable. If you have a Lorex MPX camera that needs to be replaced, the DVR model and supported resolution should be checked before choosing a replacement HDCVI camera.

Where can I buy an NVR to replace Lorex?

You can purchase a standalone 4, 8, 16, or 32 channel NVR directly from CCTV Camera World. Our Avalonix NVRs can replace compatible Lorex NVRs while allowing you to continue using supported Lorex IP cameras.

How do I replace my Lorex NVR?

Start by disconnecting the Ethernet camera cables, network cable, mouse, and display cables from the old Lorex NVR. Connect them to the compatible replacement NVR and use the power supply included with the new recorder. Your cameras may connect automatically, or you may need to enter their password or reset them before the new NVR can add them.

Can I reuse the wiring when replacing a Lorex system?

Yes, in most installations. BNC coax cable can normally continue to be used with compatible HD Analog cameras and DVRs, while RJ45 Ethernet cable can normally continue to be used with compatible IP cameras and NVRs. If you plan to upgrade an older coax system to a higher resolution such as 4K, the condition and type of coax cable should also be checked.

Do Lorex cameras work with other recorders?

Lorex cameras can work with compatible Avalonix Premium Series NVRs and DVRs. Lorex MPX and other coax cameras require a DVR that supports their video signal and resolution. Compatible Lorex IP cameras can communicate with Avalonix NVRs using the private protocol supported by those systems, providing deeper integration than an ONVIF-only connection.

Do I need to replace my Lorex cameras?

Not necessarily. If your Lorex cameras are still working, you can often replace only the recorder. If only one or a few cameras have failed, you may instead be able to replace those individual cameras while keeping your existing Lorex DVR or NVR.

Can I upgrade my Lorex cameras to 4K?

Yes. You can upgrade individual cameras or move to a 4K DVR or NVR with compatible 4K cameras. The recorder, camera signal type, and cabling all need to support the resolution you want to use.

Can I expand beyond my current camera count?

Yes. If you replace your recorder with a model that has more channels, you can add cameras later as long as the additional cameras are compatible with the recorder.

Is Lorex equipment NDAA compliant?
