The Avalonix PIREYE is a 4MP 2K HDCVI bullet camera for coax DVR systems that need more accurate motion alerts. It combines standard video motion detection with a built-in PIR motion sensor, giving compatible DVRs a better way to confirm real movement instead of relying only on pixel changes in the video. This helps reduce false alerts from rain, leaves, shadows, insects, headlights, and other scene changes that often trigger ordinary motion detection.

This camera is a practical upgrade for customers who already have coax cable installed and do not want to switch to IP cameras or run new network cable. The PIREYE uses BNC HDCVI video over coax cable, supports switchable CVBS output for standard-definition analog video compatibility, and works with compatible HDCVI DVRs. To use the PIR motion sensor event feature, the camera must be used in HDCVI mode with a PIREYE compatible DVR. PIR event detection does not work in CVBS mode.

Why Use a PIR Motion Sensor Camera?

Most analog security cameras use video motion detection. Video motion detection watches for changes in the picture, which means it can trigger from movement that does not matter. Wind, branches, shadows, reflections, rain, snow, bugs near the lens, and sudden lighting changes can all create unwanted alerts.

A PIR sensor works differently. PIR stands for passive infrared. Instead of only watching for pixel changes, the sensor looks for infrared movement within its detection area. The PIREYE uses both video motion detection and PIR detection to help confirm that an event is more likely to be caused by a real person, animal, vehicle, or other large moving object. This makes it better suited for email alerts, push notifications, DVR buzzer alerts, and motion-based recording than a basic video-only motion camera.

For the PIR event feature to work, the camera must be connected in HDCVI mode to a compatible PIREYE DVR. If the camera is switched to CVBS mode, it can provide standard-definition video output, but the PIR motion sensor event function will not be available.

For a broader explanation of how motion sensor camera systems work, see our guide to motion sensor camera systems.

Built for Existing Coax DVR Systems

The PIREYE is useful when you already have coax cable installed and want to improve motion alert accuracy without moving to a PoE IP camera system. It can be used with existing CCTV siamese cable, solid copper RG59 coax, or compatible HD video baluns over CAT5e when the cable, power, and recorder are compatible.

HDCVI technology also supports long cable runs compared with many other camera formats. Manufacturer test data lists transmission up to 700m over coax and up to 300m over UTP for 4MP HD video under lab-tested conditions. Real-world distance depends on cable quality, connector quality, interference, power delivery, and the recorder being used.

For best results, pair this camera with one of our compatible DVR recorders. A compatible DVR can receive the PIR event signal over coax in HDCVI mode and use it for alerting or recording behavior. A non-compatible DVR may still display video if it supports the camera's signal format, but it may not support the PIR event features. CVBS mode should only be treated as a basic standard-definition video output option.

4MP 2K Video with Wide Coverage

The PIREYE records 4MP 2K video for a sharper image than 1080P analog cameras. Its 2.8mm fixed lens provides a wide 107.2 degree horizontal field of view, making it useful for porches, garages, entry doors, storefronts, small warehouses, courtyards, and loading areas.

Manufacturer DORI data lists identification distance at up to 20ft under ideal conditions, with recognition up to 36ft, observation up to 72ft, and detection up to 184ft. Actual results depend on lighting, mounting height, target angle, movement, lens cleanliness, cable quality, and DVR settings.

At night, the camera uses one Super IR LED for black-and-white night vision up to 66ft. Smart IR helps control IR brightness so nearby objects are less likely to appear overexposed when they come close to the camera.

What Problems Does This Camera Solve?

  • Too many false motion alerts: PIR detection helps reduce alerts caused by video-only motion changes when used in HDCVI mode with a compatible PIREYE DVR.
  • Existing coax wiring: The camera is made for HDCVI DVR systems and uses BNC coax video.
  • Old low-resolution analog cameras: 4MP 2K video provides more detail than older 720P or 1080P analog cameras when used with a compatible DVR.
  • Unwanted DVR recordings: Better event accuracy can help reduce useless motion clips when the PIR feature is properly supported.
  • No cloud camera requirement: Recording and alerts are handled through a compatible DVR instead of a consumer cloud camera service.
  • Outdoor installation: IP67 weather resistance supports indoor or outdoor mounting when installed correctly.
