8-channel PoE recording for homes and small businesses

The Security Cameras Inc SCNVR8E is an affordable, NDAA-compliant 8-channel NVR designed for homes, offices, retail stores, restaurants, and other properties that need dependable local video recording. Eight built-in PoE ports make it possible to connect and power compatible SCI cameras without installing a separate PoE switch for a standard eight-camera system.

The recorder supports security cameras with resolutions up to 4K/8MP. Its 76 Mbps incoming bandwidth is shared by the connected cameras, while 32 Mbps of outgoing bandwidth supports client viewing and network video transmission. Camera resolution, frame rate, compression, and bitrate should be configured so the combined streams remain within these limits.

Recordings are stored locally on one SATA surveillance hard drive with a supported capacity of up to 10TB. Local recording does not require an internet connection or a monthly subscription. Internet service is only needed for remote viewing, off-site notifications, and other internet-based functions.

Remote viewing for a security camera system

Remote viewing with SCI View

Use the SCI View mobile app to watch live video and review recordings from a compatible iPhone, iPad, Android phone, or Android tablet. The recorder must be connected to a broadband internet connection for viewing from another location.

Security camera software for Windows and Mac

Computer software and browser access

SCI View software for Windows and Mac provides a larger workspace for monitoring cameras, reviewing recordings, and managing compatible SCI systems. Plugin-free browser access is also available through supported browsers for convenient local or remote system access.

Security cameras with intelligent video analytics

Camera-side intelligent detection

Compatible SCI cameras can send supported smart events to the NVR for recording, alerts, and event searches. Depending on the camera, these events may include human and vehicle detection, face detection, perimeter detection, or line crossing detection. These analytics are performed by the compatible camera, not by the SCNVR8E.

Sound detection from a compatible security camera

Sound detection from compatible cameras

When a connected SCI camera supports sound or rare-sound detection, it can send the associated event to the recorder. Available sound categories and alert functions depend on the specific camera model and its audio capabilities.

Internet connection is optional for local recording

Internet is optional for local recording

The NVR can record and display cameras without being connected to the internet. A network connection is required only when you want to use remote viewing, push notifications, email alerts, or other off-site features.

NDAA-compliant surveillance equipment

NDAA compliant

The SCNVR8E is part of the Security Cameras Inc NDAA-compliant product line. It is suitable for buyers and projects that require NDAA-compliant surveillance equipment.

Security Cameras Inc surveillance equipment

Designed for compatible SCI cameras

The recorder provides its easiest setup and broadest feature compatibility when paired with compatible Security Cameras Inc PoE cameras. Same-brand cameras support plug-and-play installation and may provide smart events, audio, and other functions according to the camera model.

Video recording capabilities

The SCNVR8E accepts up to eight IP camera channels and supports camera resolutions up to 4K/8MP. Its 76 Mbps incoming bandwidth determines how much combined video data the recorder can receive. Using H.265 or H.265+ compression can reduce bandwidth and storage use compared with H.264 while maintaining useful image quality.

The bandwidth is shared across all connected cameras. A system using higher resolutions, faster frame rates, or higher bitrates will consume more bandwidth than a system using moderate settings. This does not prevent cameras of different resolutions from being used together, but the total configured camera bitrate must remain within the recorder's 76 Mbps input limit.

Built-in PoE ports and setup

Eight built-in PoE ports carry camera power and video over the same network cable. A separate PoE switch is not required for a standard installation with up to eight compatible cameras connected directly to the recorder. The NVR is supplied by a 48 VDC, 1.5A power source.

Plug-and-play setup and full feature compatibility are provided with compatible SCI cameras. Power requirements should be checked before connecting high-power PTZ cameras, heaters, illuminators, or other specialty devices.

Live view and playback

The NVR can display up to eight connected cameras during live viewing. Recorded video can also be played back from as many as eight channels, although the number of high-resolution streams displayed smoothly at one time depends on the camera resolution and encoding settings.

The listed aggregate live-view and playback capacity is up to 30 fps at 4K, 60 fps at 4MP, or 120 fps at 2MP. These are combined decoding figures, not limits on how many cameras the recorder can record. The recorder can continue recording all configured channels as long as their combined streams remain within the 76 Mbps incoming bandwidth.

Smart detection with compatible SCI cameras

The SCNVR8E records and organizes intelligent events generated by compatible SCI cameras. Basic motion detection responds to general changes in the image. Camera-side analytics can provide more useful event categories by identifying a person, vehicle, boundary crossing, face, object, or sound.

Depending on the connected camera, available analytics may include:

Available analytics vary by camera model. Consult the camera description and the SCI guide hub before promising a particular event or setup procedure.

What to expect with ONVIF cameras

The recorder supports many third-party ONVIF Profile S cameras for basic video integration. Compatibility beyond video can vary with the camera brand, firmware, and ONVIF implementation. Motion events, audio, smart analytics, two-way audio, PTZ control, camera configuration, and push notifications are not guaranteed with third-party cameras.

Third-party camera compatibility must be tested by the user. Compatible SCI cameras are the recommended choice when plug-and-play setup and full access to supported camera-side features are important.

Storage and backup

The SCNVR8E contains one SATA hard drive bay and supports one surveillance hard drive up to 10TB. Storage can be configured for continuous, scheduled, motion, manual, or supported smart-event recording. Actual retention depends on the number of cameras, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, compression format, and recording schedule.

Use the security camera storage calculator to estimate how much recording time a selected hard drive may provide. Selected incidents can be exported to a USB drive or downloaded through compatible computer software. The system also supports FTP, NAS, or NVR mirroring when those functions are properly configured.

Remote access and alerts

SCI View provides live viewing and recorded-video playback from compatible mobile devices. SCI View software for Windows and Mac offers computer-based monitoring and system management. The recorder also supports plugin-free access through compatible web browsers.

Push notifications and email alerts can be configured for supported motion, video-loss, and intelligent camera events. Internet access is required for remote viewing and off-site alerts, but it is not required for local camera recording or local monitor viewing.

Practical day-to-day operation

The recorder can be configured for continuous recording, scheduled recording, basic motion recording, manual recording, or supported smart-camera events. Users can review video from a locally connected monitor, search the recording timeline, filter supported events, and export selected incidents when footage needs to be saved or shared.
