In 2018, security cameras offer a plethora of features that were unheard of a couple of years ago. Frequently, we are asked whether a HD over coax or IP camera is better. The answer is, it depends on the application and the environment you intend to use the camera in. To help understand why a network security camera (aka IP camera) might be better in one respect, is to understand the plethora of tweaks that can be done inside the camera's web interface.

The first step is to access the camera over the web. To access the full interface offered by the camera, you have to use Internet Explorer as shown below.

As shown in the video below, IP cameras offer a web based interface that allows the user to log in to the camera and view video, and configure settings to tweak the image. While a HD over coax camera might be the same resolution as an IP camera, it will not have a web interface to tweak the camera. Network cameras are a great tool for professional or business users looking for the flexibility and customization to set the camera as desired. Here is a brief list of common settings that can be modified depending on the camera model:

  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Saturation
  • Color or Black and White mode
  • WDR
  • Noise Reduction
  • Image Flip
  • Shutter Rate
  • Infrared Intensity Control
