If you have ever reviewed security footage and realized the subject is a tiny blur in the distance, you already know the problem with most cameras: they are built for close and mid-range coverage. The IPL14 is different. It is a 4MP IP PoE bullet camera with a motorized 8 to 32mm zoom lens designed for large outdoor areas where you need real detail far from the mounting point, not just a wide overview.

This camera is a strong fit for industrial yards, parking lots, construction sites, long driveways, and rural property because it pairs optical zoom with a Starlight class image sensor and IR night vision rated up to 120 m (about 400 ft). Instead of digitally enlarging pixels, optical zoom lets you tighten the field of view and keep usable detail on the target zone.

Key Features of the IPL14 Long Range Starlight Camera

The IPL14 is built for distance work. Use it when you need to identify a person, vehicle activity, or a plate-sized target at ranges where a fixed-lens camera becomes ineffective.

  • Motorized 8 to 32mm optical zoom: Tighten the scene without sacrificing detail. Start wide to aim, then zoom in for long distance identification.
  • Long range IR night vision: Built-in IR LEDs provide up to 120 m (about 400 ft) of illumination for large, dark areas.
  • 4MP at up to 30fps: Higher 2K class detail for zoomed-in shots and cleaner playback during review.
  • Adjustable viewing angle: Frame a wide overview or a narrow shot (about 43 deg down to 15 deg horizontal) depending on distance and target zone.
  • Built for outdoor installs: IP67 weather protection and IK10 impact resistance help the camera hold up in exposed locations.
  • Smarter triggering options: Rule-based alerts including tripwire, intrusion, fast moving, abandoned or missing object, loitering, people gathering, parking detection, plus heat map, face detection, and people counting.
  • Local backup recording: Supports microSD up to 256GB for onboard clip backup alongside NVR recording.
  • Audio and alarm integration: RCA audio in and out for external mic and speaker, plus alarm I/O (2 inputs, 1 output).

Who this camera is for

  • Parking lots and open yards: Zoom in on the far end of a lot, a specific row of parking, or a gate lane.
  • Industrial and construction sites: Watch equipment areas, loading zones, and fence lines where the camera must be mounted far away.
  • Rural homes and long driveways: Cover a long approach where a normal lens leaves vehicles and faces too small to identify.
  • Facilities that need fewer cameras: Optical zoom can reduce the need for multiple fixed-lens cameras by letting one camera do a tighter job at distance.

How to use a long range zoom camera (what matters most)

Long range cameras are won or lost in the setup. Here is the practical way to think about it:

  • Decide your target zone first: pick the gate, driveway pinch point, or lot lane you care about.
  • Mount for stability: longer focal lengths amplify shake. Use a solid mount and avoid thin poles if possible.
  • Zoom for identification: start wide to aim the camera, then zoom until the target fills enough of the frame to identify.
  • Use rule-based alerts: tripwire and intrusion rules are ideal for long distance areas because you can trigger recording only when someone enters the zone.
  • Use WDR and HLC when needed: WDR helps with backlight, HLC helps with headlight glare and bright hotspots at night.

License plate capture: what to expect

The IPL14 can be a strong option for capturing plates during the day or in well-lit conditions, especially when the plate is far away and you need optical zoom to frame it properly.

At night, plates can become tricky because reflective plate material can create glare when IR is on. If you are trying to capture plates at night, it works best when vehicles are slow or stationary and you tune settings like shutter speed, IR intensity, and HLC for your specific scene. If you need plates at night on moving vehicles, we recommend using a dedicated license plate capture camera.

You can also manually adjust or disable IR as explained in our guide here when glare is a problem.

Starlight technology allows the IPL14 to see in color in very low light

Power, recording, and integration

You can power the IPL14 using one of our PoE enabled NVRs, PoE switches, or a 12VDC power supply. For longer cable distances, the camera supports ePoE when used with compatible PoE NVRs.

To record, pair it with one of our network video recorders. You can also record to a NAS or FTP, and use a microSD card (up to 256GB) for local backup recording.

Why choose the IPL14

If you need real detail at distance on a large property, the IPL14 combines a 120 m IR rating, a motorized 8 to 32mm lens, practical perimeter analytics, and a rugged outdoor build in the Avalonix Premium Series lineup.

Pair this with a professional Avalonix PoE NVR such as the 8 camera NVR or 16 camera NVR for plug and play connectivity. Larger NVRs such as the 64 Channel NVR are also compatible.

FAQ

How far can the IR reach at night

The IR illumination is rated up to about 120 m or 400 ft. Real world range varies with ambient light, mounting height, and scene reflectivity.

Can this camera capture license plates at night

It can, but it requires correct setup and framing. Use shutter control, IR intensity management, and HLC to reduce glare. For plates on moving vehicles at night, dedicated plate capture cameras are recommended.

Is the lens a PTZ

No. The lens is motorized for remote zoom and focus. It does not pan or tilt. Set the angle during install, then adjust zoom from the NVR or app.

Does it work with Avalonix Premium Series NVRs

Yes. Use an Avalonix Premium Series NVR for plug and play setup and rule based alerts.

Will it stay in color at night

With some ambient light the camera can hold color. In very low light it will switch to black and white and use IR for clarity.

How does this compare to a 2MP long range model

This 4MP version provides higher 2K resolution for finer detail while maintaining long range IR and optical zoom for distance work.
