IP Cameras

Future Proof Security Camera Technology

At CCTV Camera World we believe IP cameras (aka network cameras) are the future of security camera technology. We rigorously test and review each IP camera model we sell to ensure it performs to specifications, and is easy to integrate with our network video recorders. Most network cameras we sell have PoE connectivity built-in, making them easy to use with any NVR with built-in PoE switch. Watch the video on the top of this page to learn more about how easy it is to setup our IP Security Camera Systems using PoE technology. Although there are several advantages to using IP security cameras, the main ones are 1) resolution support beyond 2K, and 2) easy connectivity with CAT5e or better network cabling. For customers looking to build a future proof security cameras system, IP cameras are the best choice. Be sure to browse through our selection of IP camera systems, especially our 4K security camera systems which feature the best resolution cameras money can buy combined with our professional NVRs.

Which Resolution Should You Buy?

IP Camera Resolution Comparison

CCTV Camera World offers IP Security Cameras in resolutions ranging from 1080P (aka 2 Megapixels) to 12MP. Although 4K is considered Ultra HD, you can even go beyond 4K and attain even more detail with 12 Megapixels. For convenience we have grouped 8MP and 12MP cameras together in our 4K security camera page.

The image above compares the relative size of the picture rendered by security cameras of different resolutions. While it is not true to scale, the comparison is meant to illustrate that as camera resolution increases, the picture frame size and clarity increases as well.

When choosing which IP camera you should buy, it is important to ask yourself how far you would like to see facial detail? After extensive testing, we have developed the simple table below that explains the extent of possible facial capture among different camera resolutions.

Max Face Capture Distance In Daylight

ResolutionMax Distance
D1 / 960H10ft
8MP 4K55ft

To provide a visual perspective to the above table, we developed the CCTV Camera World Security Camera Matrix. We tested the different camera resolutions we offer at 10ft distance increments from the camera to determine how well they can capture facial detail. Our Security Camera Matrix serves as an important reference when choosing which resolution IP security camera you should buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do IP cameras work?

IP cameras, also called network security cameras, capture video like a digital camera and transmit video data over a computer network. For best performance, cameras are usually connected via a hardwire ethernet connection to a network. Infrequently, they are connected wirelessly to a WiFi router. In either case, IP network cameras can record to a built-in memory card or network video recorder.

What is the difference between an IP camera and CCTV?

CCTV cameras use coax cable to transmit video to a DVR. IP cameras use Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology or WiFi to send video over a computer network to a Network Video Recorder. As of 2019, both CCTV and IP security cameras support 4K resolution. The type of camera you purchase, depends on whether you have existing coax cable.

Can IP cameras work without internet?

It is a common misconception that network cameras require internet. Internet is only needed for remote viewing over the web. IP camera systems feature plug-and-play PoE ports that allow easy connectivity without even needing a computer network.

Do IP cameras need WiFi?

Only wireless IP cameras need WiFi to connect to the network. Most IP PoE cameras are wired and do not require a WiFi connection. WiFi is also needed if you want to watch a camera system using a mobile phone or tablet connected to the same WiFi router as the cameras.

Which is better NVR or DVR?

A NVR can only be used with IP security cameras, while a DVR that is of the Tribrid type can be used with both IP and CCTV cameras. However, a DVR is limited by the resolution of network cameras it can support. For best results, a NVR is recommended for use in an IP surveillance system.
